Miller 730. "Lacks title-page;. An Extract of the Spirit; Observations on Enslaving, Importing, and Purchasing of Negroes; and the Uncertainty of a Death-Bed Repentance. This volume-title is ascribed to the Franklin and Hall press on the evidence of the Caslon type used. Of the nine items listed on the title-page, the first, fifth, sixth, and seventh had previously been printed by Benjamin Franklin and David Hall, all in Caslon type. The remainder had been printed by Christopher Saur, who owned no Caslon letter.
Anthony Benezet, the well known Quaker schoolmaster in Philadelphia assembled the collection during the spring of 1760 in a lot of 500 copies for distribution to those of a religious disposition 'in ye back parts of Maryland, Virginia and N. Carolina..and Connecticut...'- Miller
The three Franklin and Hall imprints in this copy are:
1. William Dell's Doctrine of Baptism (1759, Miller 702);
2. Dell's Trial of Spirits (1760, Miller 726) and;
3. John Rutty's Liberty of the Spirit (1759, Miller 719).
The Saur imprint is Thomas Hartley's Discourse on Mistakes Concerning Religion (1759, Evans 8364) •

Benezet's collection, including <em>Observations on the Enslaving, Importing, and Purchasing of Negroes</em> — the antislavery argument in a devotional wrapper, issued from the press of a man who still owned slaves. Lacks the title page.

Contemporary sheep with raised spine bands, housed in custom red morocco backed marbled board clamshell box. Lacks title-page and three of the nine items. Worn, joints cracked but holding, toned. A good copy.
