Charles Caldwell (1772-1853) studied medicine with Benjamin Rush at the University of Pennsylvania and wrote many medical papers. Much of this book is occupied by a discussion of the recent Yellow Fever outbreaks in Philadelphia. The author considers the situation and climate of the city, the introduction of the disease, and the reasons why it was so virulent in Philadelphia. He makes recommendations about hygiene and diet.

Caldwell's major sustained inquiry into the Philadelphia epidemics of the 1790s, drawing on European and American literature to build the historical and comparative framework for his hybrid position. Closer to Currie than to Rush on some questions, closer to Rush on others, and ultimately his own man on all of them -- Caldwell's Memoirs is what happens when a thoughtful physician refuses to be bound by the debate's established terms.
