Rhode Island's laws had been revised three times by 1752. The first revision was printed in Boston in 1719, and the second and third at Newport in 1730 and 1745. This volume continues the 1745 revision. It is arranged by session, not by subject as the revisions were, and it runs from 1745 to 1752.

The printer was James Franklin Jr. (1730-1762), the son of Benjamin Franklin's brother James and Ann Smith Franklin. His mother had carried on the Newport press after his father's death in 1735, and the two were the colony's printers when this volume came off the press. He later began the Newport Mercury. His uncle Benjamin had taken him as an apprentice in Philadelphia.

The Newport press is the oldest strand of the family trade. The elegy of 1744 came from the same shop under Ann's name.
