A single leaf carrying three separate acts of writing over thirteen days. On the front, Attorney General William Bradford Jr. asks the state treasurer to pay Jonathan Dickinson Sergeant forty-five pounds in specie. The sum is the balance of Sergeant's expenses for fifty days' attendance "on the Trial between this Commonwealth & Connecticut." Bradford corrected the figure as he wrote. He dated it 1782, a slip of the pen in the first weeks of the new year.

On the back, dated the next day, Rittenhouse writes out and signs his own order, "Dav. Rittenhouse Treasr," directing the Sheriff of Philadelphia County to pay Sergeant the sum "out of the publick Monies in your hands." Below it, Edward Fox acknowledges receipt of the money on Sergeant's behalf on 29 January 1783.
