The most exhaustive collection of Cobbett's works, totaling over 5200 pages, and reprinting the texts of all of Cobbett's numerous and rare books and pamphlets, as well as much new material, including new notes and intermediate matter required to render the whole more intelligible. In his preface, Cobbett states his object as "to convince the world, that their (the United States) prosperity and happiness have not been augmented by a rebellion, though a successful one, against the mildest, most just, and most virtuous of Sovereigns."

In the same place, Cobbett testifies to his independence from all parties and influence, including"his Majesty's Ministers," while commenting on his fast friendships with Americans, made while he spent "my best days in America. "
