Pringle served as Physician General to the British Army in the 1740s, and is widely regarded as the father of military medicine. His books lay down the principles of military sanitation and the ventilation of barracks, gaols, hospitals, ships, etc‚ it was due to his remarks‚ that foot soldiers were given blankets when on service. This book was first published in 1752 and is a collection of experiences, accounts, and observations of his involvement with military medicine.

Pringle, physician-general to the British army in the 1740s, laid down the principles of military sanitation; his book put blankets on foot soldiers. Rush, who had been Surgeon General of the Continental Army's Middle Department and had written his own <em>Directions for Preserving the Health of Soldiers</em> in 1777, edited the first American edition. The collection holds three copies.
