The Seely Commission
In July 1763, at the outbreak of Pontiac's War, Governor James Hamilton commissioned Jonas Seely of Berks County, a French and Indian War captain, to raise two companies of foot against the raids on the frontier. The commission is printed by Franklin & Hall — a variant of Miller 741 — and completed in manuscript, with the provincial seal intact. Seely and six of his men fought eight warriors that September.
No other copy is recorded. It is the kind of paper a press produced by the dozen on a bad afternoon and nobody kept.
